Andrew Murrison's Bill to tax waste incineration to undermine the financial viability of the planned Westbury burner technically falls today as this session of Parliament ends on prorogation. However, the Bill has been printed up by the House authorities and Andrew will re-table following the State Opening of Parliament next month. He is also writing again to Wiltshire Council Leader Ian Thorn to urge a change in direction away from incineration. Andrew said;
"Incineration is fast becoming a legacy technology with substantial overcapacity already across the country. With ministers signaling that they're looking at European-style incineration taxes as proposed in my Bill beyond extra fees in the pipeline from 2028 and reduced waste feedstock as we recycle more, investors stand to lose a great deal of money. I strongly urge them to back off and the council to de-risk waste disposal by doing all it can to frustrate this unwanted, unneeded Westbury incinerator. At the moment, I am sorry to say, the council's leadership is complicit in Hills Waste/NREL's Northacre burner scheme which is disappointing given its rhetoric in opposition."
